Here are the first practise times for Mugello.
Check out how fast the bikes are, Pedrosa's Honda nearly hit 350 kph.
Lap times are displayed first then the kph.
Stoner definately has no power advantage now.

Surprised not to see the Ducati with the higher tops speed??

Pedrosa has the best stature to get that top speed - he can sit in behind the screen no problem!!!

So Bayliss hasn't been able to help Hayden with the Ducati, hey? Good to see Melandri right in the middle too.

Interesting, even with the 349kmh DP is fourth whilst the supposed top speed superiority of Stoner's Ducati makes him the slowest of the top four in the straight line at the moment. I would be so interested to see a breakdown of top speed times to see whether DP had a tow on that lap or whether it was consistently that high (ditto Kallio)

Lets see what qualifying brings

Anyway, it all means nothing until the end of the race

You gotta feel for Hayden ... what would you do if you found yourself in his place?

“This is a very different circuit to Le Mans and to be honest I was hoping that coming here, to the track where this bike was born, we would be on the pace. Unfortunately we’re not and the truth is we’re struggling again – it’s pretty demoralising because every track we go to at the moment seems to cause us different kinds of problems. Here the worst thing is the bumpiness of the surface, which is unsettling a bike that can already be quite unstable. It is hard to change direction when the bike isn’t planted and that’s a big thing here.”

Plus Vermeulen's pre-race comments. Always interesting :ayyy: I'
d love to see him up the pointy end, seems like a really good bloke.

Sunday, 31 May 2009
As the MotoGP riders flexed their muscles ahead of the fifth race of the season in Italy it was Ducati rider Casey Stoner who lapped quickest on a wet track.

With rain beginning to fall just at the beginning of the MotoGP warm up in Tuscany the premier class riders went out with their wet tyres on and Casey Stoner emerged as the fastest participant.

Apparently ready for whatever conditions lie ahead, Stoner starts from second on the grid and he will aim for Ducati?s first ever Mugello victory having led the way in the morning by a half second margin from former team-mate Marco Melandri - who was second quickest on his Hayate Racing Kawasaki.

A man always seemingly comfortable in the rain, which in fairness had calmed down by the end of the session, Rizla Suzuki?s Chris Vermeulen was third, with World Champion Valentino Rossi fourth. Rossi?s Fiat Yamaha team-mate and poleman Jorge Lorenzo took no risks, down in 13th place.

The top ten was completed by Suzuki?s Loris Capirossi, Ducati?s Nicky Hayden, LCR Honda?s Randy de Puniet, Yamaha satellite rider Colin Edwards and additional Honda pair Alex de Angelis and Andrea Dovizioso.

Not a fan of this bike change in the middle of the race shit. Still dont know who makes the call on what tyres, Surely Jeremy Burgess cant get it that wrong, last round, he had Rossi pit three times, with mixed tyres, including a wet and a slick at the same time, this time had two hard compounds that he surely mustve knew would take time to heat and grip, while the others got away with almost half the race gone anyway..

Nah, thats bullshit, start off with one bike, finish off with that bike, cant get the tyres to last ? choose carefully and or tuff titty, thats racing, new tyres mid way through a race, also means new bike, just not right...

One thing I don't understand (... actually, too many things).
When they change to dry tyres (slicks), why do they go so slow on the first lap - to give the tyres a chance to heat up - when they've been on the warmers?

These race tyres need a lot of heat to work properly, warmers only get them closer to where they need to be. (though if they used the RATS ones they would be better off :lmao:) The track temp is also low as it is still drying.

To add to this if you have dual compound tyres with a mainly left (counter clock wise) or right handed track (clockwise) as is the case for most European tracks then you have to wait for the left side to get up to temp especially.
