40 years ago you would have filled the tank up with nuts and bolts (and oil/turps) and given it a good shake :D

You can buy kits that treat the insides of the tank,
like this

Thanks for the link Thunderace, might have to invest in some of that gear for my
track bikes tank.
This is the best stuff you can get. POR-15 http://www.ppc.au.com/restoration.htm
It costs approx 60 bucks for a motorcycle tank pack.

Go to a hardware store, & get a 1 lt bottle of rust convertor. Pour it in the tank, slosh it around for about half an hour, then wash it out. You might need to do it a couple of times..I just did my tank with it & it worked a treat..

I used a 3 step tank rust treatment and it worked a treat on my sons bike. Not the brand on the link , but I would say it would work just as well. POR is good stuff too, It stands for paint on rust from US, I've used it on boats and it dries as hard as nails, but it's no good in the sun ,no UV protection, but that dont matter in a tank now does it.The rust coverter would work too ,but like sbutler said , a couple of coats would be needed as it needs to fully seal the rust, and that is the goal, Rust can only grow if it can get oxygen.

I have used POR-15 on my Z1R tank, bit of messing around but comes up really well.
