The Halfway house on the Putty road burnt down last night, make sure you carry enough fuel for your Putty loop rides now!

Not much up there now then!

I can get to the 1/2 house an back to Wilberforce on a tank, many wouldn't be able to........But there is not much point going all the way there is that place is gone......may as well go the whole way if you venture past Colo.

I can see the coppers hanging around Colo now.

Insurance job?

That was my first thought, it seemed they were having some $ issues (hence their raising petrol to $2 per L to keep the petrol supply going).

That and the fact that they were out of fuel at the moment and not getting any til next week :lmao:

Years ago they'd patrol that fun section before the straights, sometimes with marked 4WD hidden in the scrub with lidars.

I haven't been up there for ages so perhaps they stopped policing it and then started again... though if I were to go through I'd be on my toes regardless.

I live pretty close to that section and spend a lot of time there and a lot of petrol HAHa......never seen them there.......The 6 corners, almost flip flop, going down hill about 2 K's from the end are my favourite corners anywhere, coppers couldn't sit in there......it would be too dangerous for everyone, but elsewhere on the hill there could be traps galore.

With the burning down of the 1/2 way house it will probably encourage more riders in there, then more coppers.......If more riders do opt to stay in there.......more crashes..........and I'd hate to come unstuck there because there is only armco and sandstone run off.

The servo at Kulnura burnt down a few years ago, the one on the corner that takes you down to Yarramalong, seemed very suss at the time too.
The halfway house may come back bigger and better in it's new incarnation, you can only hope, just have to take a rest minus food in the carpark.

I'm sorry about the petrol, and about having lost a convenient stop .... but what a dump it was. Honestly.

It was in the middle of nowhere, could hardly blame them for not spending any money on the place..........It was at least cleaner than that dump on the old road.

I can make Broke to Windsor on the 848 with only a 15L tank, even with 2 laps of the Colo section.
I hope it comes back though as mentioned was a good rest stop before the boring open section.

I've stopped at worse ... and eaten when I had to :lmao:, but honestly, if a place like that existed in Sydney would you go there? It reminds me of the shops we had in the 70's; a bit of nostalgia maybe, but that's about it.

Been camping plenty of times BTW, good fun :ayyy:

Hope the cockatoo's and other birds outside in the cages survived.

I always fueled up at Broke, did my laps and went back the same way. Same on the other side. I always thought they had nice friendly service there in a laid back country type of manner.

Apparently it was on the news yesterday morning - however I didnt see that :(

I rode up on the RC8 about 2pm thinking "What a great day, no one in sight, lets have a good fun ride, dont need to worry about fuel as the half way house is there"

Everyone can understand my shock and horror as I pulled into the half way house with an almost empty tank (the RC8 drinks fuel like a teenage girl does alcopops). I am usually lucky to get about 165 k's to a tank and was already 112 into the tank by the time a rolled into the half way house. I was lucky that I did a splash and dash at windsor prior to heading to putty road - I had 25 k's on the clock and was almost just going to ride straight thru to the half way house but at the last moment decided to pull in and top up - without the splash and dash I would not have come close to getting through to Broke!

There is a big For Sale sign out the front of the half way house with the words "Must Be Sold" so seems like it was going to be sold off soon anyhow. I guess that now it is burnt out it may not sell as quick.

The birds in the cage did seem fine as did the house out the back, it was only the service station / kitchen that was burnt out.

Anyhow, I managed to get up to Broke, filled up and then turned around and headed back towards windsor, this time stopping at the servo at Colo (or near there) which enabled me to make it without running out of fuel. I had a sensational ride, the weather was sensation, there was not another soul on the road (apparently the cops were working the old road pretty heavily on sunday).

It seems that every time I ride putty road, there is a fire, last time I rode it the bike blew up, this time, the servo blew up - seems like the road is doomed!

Chado, if you fill up at Windsor or out on the singleton side as far as you can, you should get to Broke...

I couldn't post the picture of the burnt Half Way House, so here is the link to my album with a picture from yesterday. Fuel tanks didn't explode, so all things being equal, what seems to be superficial damage externally shouldn't take too long to make good. I don't know internal damage though, but here's hoping it can come back even better.

Fuel should never be an issue unless you are riding a Z50. Stop at the Caltex on the way up at Wilberforce, it my usual meeting place. If you are only doing laps of the Putty instead of turning off at Mibrodale road and filling up at Broke, ride an extra 2 klms past the Mibrodale turnoff and fuel up at Bulga, service station on the left hand side.
