View Full Version : dedicated track day at Wakefield - with a twist?

Hey all,
Dilbee pointed out the huge number of postie bikes at Pickles... a mate thinks they go for about $200 each when sold privately, I dont know how much at the auctions....$150??? Sprinter can let us know if thats the case. but...
What would you think of hiring out Wakefield one day for a trackday, use it for the morning as we normally would, then have some afternoon postie bike races..
We could buy a stack of postie bikes really cheap (hopefully)? $150? $200? each... then take them to Wakefield and have a ball in the arvo... races of say 10 bikes, 3 lap heats... swapping the bikes around so no-one can claim the one they got was too slow etc :)
Then sell them off afterwards... or give it to Pickles to sell them... they wouldnt be wrecked if they werent crashed so we could probably re-coup most of the money... or us RATs could just keep them for the next time :)
It'll come down to the $$... Sprinter, what do they sell for? Whats the cost to 'give' them back to Pickles to sell..
Who'd be in it if we could hire out Wakefield for the day?
Whatcha think??? can you picture getting out onto Wakefield with a gaggle of postie bikes with the only difference between us being skill levels :) I reckon that would be awesome fun... I'd happily put $ aside for that experience...

thats a great idea jason. postie racing would be a blast!!:D
we have a booking for wakefield in nov next year, but seeing our numbers are growing im thinking we may have to try to secure the track early next year as well. the track is completely sold out for this year.

Its a good idea and Ill be in it but they are a little more than youve allowed for. We are selling them for about $750 at the moment.Sometimes I see them cheaper on eBay but they are older and have been in private hands for a while.Pickles is the only way you can buy them direct from the Post Office. I cant help with the price (as we dont own them) but will haggle with the boss over fees we'd normally charge and the same on their return. He rides too and although only the once he has done a track day at Wakefield too so Ill see if I can con him into it.
To save the most on price the best way would be say we get 15 in to sell. Probably 4-8 would sell on the day. The rest that are passed in I can have a standing offer on off for example $600. The vendor can accept it or not but it avoids getting caught up in a bidding war. The downside is you only get whatever is left over each time. So it would pay to plan ahead a bit so that you can grab them over a period of time. Assuming maybe 3-5 get sold to us at a time. I can try to work something out with other branches to pick up a few extras but that may or may not pan out
Probably good to get them well in advance so you can at least check the safety and running condition of them.
The risk for whoever buys them is this doesnt happen and theyve laid out $600 odd dollars for a postie bike
If this turns out Id suggest maybe keeping them rather than selling. Its not a fortune tied up in one so even if it was only once a year (Christmas Party maybe?) it would be worthwhile. Maybe even work on some rules for Formula Postie (big bore kits , turbos:eyecrazy: )
Sorry for the long post hope Ive made sense

They are much more expensive as sprinter says.
Many postie bike races have been proposed over the years but they usually don't get off the ground because not everybody can find a cheap postie!

D'oh.... thats changing it from totally affordable 'for fun' expense to being more of a 'serious' expense :(

I think once you buy them from the auctions you have to get a blue slip, i think they only have compliance for Aust. Post

Well, I'm still in, just it has to change a little...
The price is too high to just 'chip in' as any damage can actually cost enough to worry about.. but...
If you think of it this way, you can save, buy one, then take it to our track day, then sell it... its not like it'll cost you anything since you can sell it straight after...
What, its like 18 months till Wakefield... put aside $50 a month till then and think of it as a savings plan :) you'll get it all back after you sell it :)
Cmon ... its still within reach... ??

now that is a damn good idea...:ayyy:
show up at PI in a pack of posties - all wearing full leathers with worn out knee sliders.
Anyway i am interested in any group buy of posties wether we race them or not cause i want a cheap commuter.
i am happy to spend up to a grand for one
its still cheaper than catching the bus for a year and a shitload faster (and fun).

just looked at the pickles site and it seems they are auctioning a heap of posties on 30/6.
all the ads say "frame needs attention" not sure what that means but i know for sure that after 1 month with me it will certainly need attention then ;)

I'd have the power to weight advantage at least :doggy:

Sometimes if they are lazy they talk a bike down if its a little iffy. That way the buyer cant complain if there is something wrong that they didnt see.Or....its a heap of accident damaged ones theyve been waiting to build up to sell all at once. Ill see what i can find out but they arent in Canberra so I dont always get a reply when I ask:mad:
