View Full Version : Opinions about helmets...
Hi. I've had the Shark for the last 2 years and I love it,
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v300/pansta/Hayabusa/mohawk.jpg
...but the time has come to buy a new one. I like the newer Shark, but thought I'd check out other helmets before I head off to see Fullhouse to buy one... :ayyy:
Any thoughts on these two specimens?
has anyone had them, or can anyone comment on whether they are noisy, comfy, etc...

Can`t help ya mate with either of those 2.
I usually buy AGV for no other reason other than AGV fit my buff head the best.

yeh i cant help ya on eithe rof them either, but ill be watching this thread closely. i had a AXO for 5 years til i crashed at ec last year...so it was time to buy a new one....i figured 5 years of technology would make helmets heaps better....so i got a VEMAR cheap thru a mate...well its actually noisier and heavier than my old axo so im not sure what happened to technology!!:(
i do need to buy a new one eventually before i go deaf from the wind noise!!!:O

Ive got a literally brand new HJC Phoenix for sale if you are interested. Size is largish medium. I wore it for an hour and then realised I dont have a big enough head for it. I havent got around to trying to sell it cause I want it to fit but its not going to shrink anytime soon:(
It has a Fog City HyperOptik fitted as well which was $60 alone. $300 plus postage.

the great helmet debate :lmao: :lmao:
lets see maybe I can guess the direction this thread will go;
questions
are the cheap helmets as good as the costly ones?
#yes & no which isn't an answer but the truth, so long as they meet the Australian design standard they should do there job if a $100 helmet of a $1000 helmet. The material, comfort, design are what the extra money is for.
whats the silver sticker on the side for?
#that means it has passed Australian design standard & legal to use in Australia & should protect your head to that standard, there are higher standards which is also why some helmets cost more.
what fits my head & what should I buy?
#ffs does your mother still buy your underpants & socks, you buy what you can afford that best fits your head, its such a simple answer to a complex question. You may be able to buy the latest & greatest like a X-11 etc but when you try it on, the fit feels funny. Then you try a helmet that is 1/2 the cost but fits so well it sucks your face & fells part of you. Which one do you buy?? the one that fits best because a good fitting helmet is the most important thing above design & looks.
what is a quiet helmet?
#the only quiet helmet on the market is one that sits in your cupboard & doesn't get used, there is an invention in the modern world called ear plugs, you stick them in your ears for things to be quiet. If you think there is a quiet helmet on the market for hwy speed your dreaming again & your not really reading this go back to racing rossi.
hope that helps :lmao:

I gots me that model arai, or the model up I think. I like arai's they fit my head good. dunno whether this is common for all helmets, but my last arai wore in really quickly, but I was wearing it everyday, when I got my dreadies it wore in even better, made me wonder how long the liner would last. Longest I've owned an arai is 18months of daily use, liner was still good but I doubt it would last 5 years. -J.

I have an axo Carbon fibre construction helmet, It is the lightest helmet on the market. it is the second one ive had as the first sacraficed itself saving my noggin! only problem is they are unavailable in australia now!for some reason Axo pulled it off Australian shelves! got the last one in Australia I did!
I used to wear AGV but found them too noisy/too buffered to ride in.
I have swapped to Shark and find them fantastic light, quiet and great airflow.
I always wear Alpine Earplugs - a bit pricy at 50buck, but fit my rude shaped ears better than the squishey ones.

I've a Nolan - seems pretty good- always wear earplugs - sometimes noisier that othertimes for some strange reason! Anyway, seems comfortable enough- went for comfort before price, but good a good price anyway.

PanMan, i've got 2 Suomys at the moment, i had an AGV and have had Shoei and Axo. The Suomys are super light and cofortable, with the liner being able to be removed for cleaning in about 10 seconds. I like helmets you can remove the liner so you can keep them clean. Try one on and see for yourself. Its gonna come down to what fits ya noggin the best. :ayyy:

Good to see so many posts here about wearing earplugs... I started going deaf after riding a few years got earplugs and its stopped it from getting worse.. good on you all!
P.s. BMW helmets are ultra quiet and light, but when tucked it doesnt give very good track visibility - the crown creeps down a little too much.. probably my head fitment but its something to try when looking at buying a new helmet.

I like the Shoei XR-1000. When I bought my first one I tried shitloads of different types of helmets and went to heaps of different shops to explore a wider range and just kept coming back to the same one. At the time it was more than I wanted to pay, but it's worth paying more in the end for the right fitting helmet.
I also have a second cheaper HJC helmet for the track. The rationale is this:
I don't have to pay $800 replacement each time it gets damaged in a crash (replacement is about 250).
It doesn't matter if it's a bit less comfortable because it's only on for 20 minutes at a time.
I'm less likely to hit a tree, or car or any of the things you might hit on the road, so as long as it meets the AUS standard, I figure I can compromise on quality.

My old helmet is a schwantz and ive even had him sign it on the back for me saying to Dylan Kevin Swantz. :) That was a arai and its been a great helmet but the linning has worn as its not a snug fit anymore. :( So now ive got a shoe RF1000 which is a US helmet which is a limited one that matches my bike colour scheme. I think the RF1000 is called something else here. But that a top helmet and comfy and quiet.
Arai's have alway been a cofy lid and fit well. id still go an arai but shoe have matching lids for the gixxers now but you can only get them from the US. :(
One other point is these helmets only have the dot sticker which is the US standard sticker.

When i got my first Arai, it was a beautiful moment and i haven't looked back since. paying for my RX7RR was excruciating at the time, but even if it just saves a nasty concussion (or worse), it'll be well worth it. Needless to say the fit and quality can't be matched (for my head anyway) I tried on an X-11 Shoei, but it didn't fit too well across the forehead..
I've tried on heaps of my mates helmets, but none of them feel as reassuring as the Arai - completely psycological, but still...
I often change visors 3 times a day, so the super quick changing system is great.
I had to sacrifice a few nights out so i could justify it, but really, what price do you put on your head??

$2 head, $2 helmet or so the saying goes. Arai all the way I rekon. Shoei are great also, but without the podson the side, watch any race on telly and when a heap of people crash, the Shoei (and other guys) get up with no visor coz it was ripped off. The Arai's still have them on coz of the pods and so have better face protection. Forget the "pods give noise" bullshit too, that is total crap. Shrug your shoulders while you ride and hear the noise vanish. That is where most of the noise is from.
Remember with your helmets, you should when buying a new one, have it fit as tight as it can be without hurting your head. Forget how hard it is to put on, it will get easier athe more times you do it and it "opens up" , but I have lost sales on that many helmets coz the guy is saying "nah too small, I need a large" when they do NOT. They put my helmet on , a medium, but worn and it fits great, but can't make the connection between wearing it a while and how it feels right now. As long as you can get your head in (and try hard, it sometimes is very hard initially to get in, but just coz it is, don't mean it's too small) and you don't have a headache in a few minutes, your cheeks should be pushed together and it should be pretty tight. If it doesn't hurt anywhere, it's your size. Hope this helps.

I have a Ti Tech, quite light... but the RSR2 in medium (both helmets are medium) is lighter! If it isn't it certainly feels and looks like it (definitely smaller)!!
And the GP tech is supposed to be heavier than both but it does have better features. At least that's what I read on the interwebs.:confused1:
AGV are the only helmet that fit me properly!! I have the GP, and it is quite noisy and ALL the extra vent doo-dads have broken off rendering them useless. Not worth the exra money IMO. Poor quality fittings/plastics. Hopefully the shell is better......But it fits gooood.lol

If it is for track use do you need the sticker?? I know CB checks the helmets but ECRD and Champions don't
I haven't seen Bell locally for around 20 years
My current lid and the best I have had - my OGK FF4 fits like a glove, great ventilation and the visor release is a one button push unit.
How many helmet manufactures advertise a quick release system, where nothing could be further from the truth. It is also quiet which I love.
I will either get the latest model the FF5 or I might try Arai

I've found wind noise to be a common complaint with Shoei which also leads on that replacement visors are poor fitting , this I admit that Shoeis may not suit my fat head but this just my opinion

If they question you. I would throw this at them.... As long as they come under MA or FIM. this is the official rule.. To me this means it can carry any of the following....

According to the ECRD website, you need a •Full face helmet that meets Australian AS1698 standards
That seems pretty clear, what MA says is probably irrelevant if we're being particular. I'm sure MA allows passing closer that 2m too, yet ECRD do not, and it's their ride days, they can make their own rules.
