Having had my race start (in)ability publicly mocked by the fast starting Wetty (whom, I might add, I beat in 2 out of 4 races ), I completely agree that my technique sucks! I was much better on the gixxer, but launching the R6 has got me stymied.
So, not owning a road-legal bike, I thought it might be an idea to take the R6 to WSID for some race start practice on Wednesday's Race for Real event. I have two questions (and yes, I did do a search before posting this):
1. How do bikes organise themselves.... I mean, the advice on the website seems to indicate you just do a run and join back up at the end queue to wait for the next run. Is there an option to run tyre warmers, or do you just run on - brrrrr - cold slicks?
2. Does anyone care to join me?? It'd be great to get a RATs contingent going.....

Most pick up a bike the night before....
Turn up with your bike.. once inspected, it gets a sticker and you queue up in one of two lines...... the cars are in the first 5 or 6 lines.. they empty the lines one at a time... once all cars have had their first run, then the bikes go through two at a time... once all the bikes have had a go , then the cars go through again ..
depends on how many cars and bikes turn up but you normally get in 5 or 6 runs in the night.... No tyre warmers... you only run very low pressure to get max foot print down and launch area is covered in rubber... so lots of traction.
If you have an old rear tyre, then put it on... Crowd expects a little burn out.....
if its a race bike then you are meant to have a rear light on it so they can see where you are down the strip... but last time I took the track bike, i didnt know that rule.. didnt have one and no one picked up on it ????

for a race bike just put a pushbike rear light on. easy as.
if you want warm tyres, do a burnout.
i personally never bothered. if yo bike wheelspins before wheelstanding, you are doing some insane starts!

Hi Marshy. WSID may be good practice for race starts, but it may not. I find it's a totally different launch at WSID to a normal track/road. WSID is waaaaaaay stickier and you're unlikely to lose traction. Also, your tyrre pressure is normally down.
No tyre warmers, but you do a burnout to warm up your rubber before you launch.
I've heard of people going to unused Industrial Estates and practising that sort of thing. I've also heard of police showing up and asking them to move on... :spank:

ive been pulled up before on my lid, it was to oz standard, but not the oz/nz. they changed the standard awhile ago, even tho its the same standard number, if your little sticker does not have AS/NZS on the back you cant use it. last time i was there i blew up at them, i had my $750 AGV, they wouldnt let me ride unless i went to the helmet man operating outta the back of his truck and i could pick up a lid for $70. i said no thanks, then played the "ive never been here before card" which done the trick at the 11th hour.
side stand would also help on your tracky unless you got a pit crew...

I like your starts just how they are Marshy. Just face that camera out the side of something so it doesn't catch me when I stuff up!

Thanks very much to all for the learned advice, everyone! It seems that attending WSID might not be the panacea I was hoping for... And yes, thanks chicken, although I was quite relieved in hindsight that I'd gotten such a bad start!
Hmmm, so I guess I'll just have to front up on the start line at FX and give it another crack. Any pointers, anyone? More revs are required for the R6, obviously. Any other advice gratefully received!!
Chest on the tank and visor touching the screen with legs out (left and right) for balance. That's how the drag racers launch...

i went to the drags every wed nite for months at a time back in 96 n 97 n 98 . best start practice you can get. dont let the tyre down so much. just do it. you need to experiment. holding the throttle flat dont work.

When I had my 07 R6 I found holding it flat at about 11000 rpm and just dropping the clutch with little or no slipping worked best. I'm no gun starter but this worked pretty well for me when I eventually worked out the right rpm.
