Ok so its a bit boring on here at the mo so i will do my bit to keep you all poppin in for a peep.
This time i will finish the story (in the past i have got slac) so the newbies to this option will be better informed and not get bitten like some have .
So here is where you start http://www.manheim.com.au/brvm/items?searchType=S&CategoryID=02&State=NSW&SearchString= , after finding something you like take the day off work and fill your pockets with cash.
The bike auctions are now fortnightly at Manhiem Moorebank.
Go in and sign on get a bidders card and then go and inspect all the bikes(you cannot inspect unless you have a card, so if you go with a mate he has to sign in to, no cost)at your leisure. Be sure to have a good look you dont want any suprises.
Then go and grab a coffee and take a seat. When your victim pops up go with your strategy , bid early or wait till the end, only problem is there are bidders online so its hard to see what they are thinking. I have tried both and still not sure which way to go.
Today i went late ,2 bids and i owned it, $3700 and then $3900 and it was over . It started at $2k. The auctioneer tried atrating at $4k then $3k , i think online started at $2k.
So here is what i "won"(fuking eBay).

When it crashed did it wheelstand and finish balancing on 1 wheel? Cause the front half of that thing is immaculate
Keen to find out how much something like this would end up costing. Well I guess what it would cost someone like me who would need to pay for labour etc.
Seems like a pretty good way to get an almost new bike on the track.

Ok so with spanners and allen keys in hand go for gold and strip it out to where you think it needs to be to have a good idea what it will need in the way of frame , fork , wheels , swingarm , disc straightening.
This is where i needed to get to with this beauty

Ok so with all the road gear removed a decision has to be made is where to get rid of it all , the garbage or eBay or a wrecker .
This is totaly up to yourselves . eBay if you have the time , the wreckers ie:Metros if you want to offload it quick or the bin if its all farked

I'm no expert and it's always harder to tell from looking at pictures but it seems to be in great form if you're gonna track it! Other than maybe a new sub frame and tray (?)...

So after giving it a good once over its measures up straight(aldo just dropped by for a bevvy).
So now we need to make a list of what we need to find from the wreckers nearby or interstate or good old eBay ($1.10 today).
We will start with the basics to get it on the track 1st. Dont want to scare anyone off the idea straight up.
Subframe complete
Undertray
Race fairings
Rearsets
15t front sprocket
H/bar weights(they wernt there)
Fancy Muffler
Oggy knobs

nice thread, looks like you got a good bike pretty cheap. very cost effective way to get out on track!
WET4URacing
28-07-2011, 09:04 AM
Yes Russ
With the way the insurance companys are "stat" ing crashed bikes now its a good time to be buying them up . The word is they will be reversing this sometime soon so most of the bikes i have picked up cheap with bugger all damage other than cosmetic wont be "stat" they will be "repairable" so will be more expensive . Not everyone wants to ride on the track.
READ , they wont be making any bikes "repairable" that are already "stats", if they are "stat" now they will always be.
zRoYz
28-07-2011, 09:49 AM
Wetty the insurance companies have every bike now listed as stat here in NSW because of the new legislation that was brought in & any bike/car that is writen off even if you could class as repairable can't be registered in NSW unless your willing to take the risk & jump through the extra hoops asking for an exemption from the RTA. We all know what there like to deal with so your playing with fire & more cost to try to register because you may buy something you think can be registered that is classed repairable & they can knock it back so your stuck with a lemon.
That is why I thought every bike is listed as stat & prices have dropped because of that, unless I'm wrong, I thought insurance companies would start shipping wrecks they can class as repairable out of state to sell were they don't have NSW policy.
WET4URacing
28-07-2011, 09:59 AM
If its STAT its STAT no ifs or butts. And there not lemons just not allowed on the roads. There is no exemption(you may have read about it but there hasnt been 1 issued)
But there is a bit of a loop hole with a few , reg'd them in ACT then change the rego over to NSW . Ol mate says it when they pop up . I am not into roadys so i got no idea. Too hard and dont care.
There are still some repairables poppin thru the auctions
There is alot going to Lebanon. there were 2 seperate buyin there on wed this time.

and you didnt say hi?
haha sorry mate I didn't know who you were. It's ridiculous how easily they write bikes off now. I have a K9 GSXR750 sitting in my garage that is a stat writeoff but not a mark on the frame, forks, swingarm etc.. Just fairing damage, not even a scrape on the footpegs. It's good in a way though, because it means they go a little bit cheaper, which helps when you're converting them to track bikes. I almost won the 2010 R1 with the GYTR pipes but an online bidder outbid me just before the hammer dropped and then it ended up going for a bit more. They all went for decent prices though, I'll definitely buy 2 or 3 next time I go...
Good luck fixing her up, she'll definitely come up nice with a bit of work.

Next we fit some rearsets . Note the HRC brake hose. With the way the m/cyl in mounted to the bracket the res. hose isnt long enough so the HRC hose is a must and it looks cool. Also found a muffler and mid pipe floatin about the shed which finished this photo off quite well and the exhaust hanger so we can get rid of the pillion peg .

So we have to make a bracket and hang it in the air. I would normally go to town with the side cutters but that may freak a few of you out so i am just doing enuf to get it to the track nice and neat and safe.

With a good eye and knowing what and where the spare parts are you need before bidding it doesnt take long to get an auction bike on the track.
Sure its not painted and its got stock suspension but this model will be more than plenty enough for the average track day punter.
All in this liitle sucker was about $6500 retail ready to ride. Even has 3 keys , near new tyres and 12k on the clock. Going by the chicken strips it was an easy 12k.
Next installment will be to get it ready to race .
so dont be shy boys n girls get out to the auctions and grab yourselves a bargain .

Can't believe I'm saying this, but I think you've inspired me Paul.:ayyy:
Love how the exhaust was just lying around. Wish I had that sort of stuff taking up space in the shed.
Any tips on picking something at an auction that would be suitable without 1000's in repairs being needed?
Or always better to bring someone more mechanically minded along?
I've thought of buying something cheap and doing it up over time but always worried I'd think something was OK and it would end up being the same price as buying new to repair!

The tips are in black and white on page 1 thru to page 4. Hence the thread.
If you have no idea then yes its best to drag or pay someone to pop along (how i met McNuffin , he called and asked for help, he needed it, and still does ;)).
You can view before the auctions , all the details are on there web sites.

It looks really good in white! Probably my favorite color after green for this bike. I still dream of getting my painted green and then throwing this set of stickers on it:

had the opportunity to ride the bike due to my ambition outweighing my talent during the 4hr
have to admit i was pleasantly surprised by how good it went considering it was stock as a rock. If it had a full system (remove cat), PCV+Autotune, braided lines, tweak the gearing, the bike would be pretty darn handy! The suspension was the most surprising part. The rear was hooking up nicely even with worn tyres, wasn't drifting out of corners (like a gsxr does) and was stable under brakes. I can now understand why some of the FX racers are going so quick without touching the stock suspension. As for riding position, i found the bars were a little to high, so the seating wasn't as agressive as the R6, but that is easily fixed with clip ons. The engine has real good top end pull similar to an R6, but has far more mid range, so you can get away with trying to get out of a corner in the wrong gear.
If anyone wants a cheap bike that's good without spending heaps of cash on it... I pains me to say.. I would be recommending the 6.

stock as a rock. only muffler has been changed along with the rest in the thread, not even sags were checked. these are the goods straight outa the box. even stock damper.

That's what that kid 'Scott' who's racing on FX said to me at The Farm except he said I should change the rear shock for an Ohlins unit once I brake into the mid to low 40s consistently. Yeah right...
Anyway, bitter sweet to hear that the bike is NOT the bottle neck here.

Yep, I said the same after testing these stock a while back - pretty damn handy for an OEM machine around EC as it went! Great machine to cut teeth with. And probably pretty unlikely to blow up too, which is a bonus! :ayyy:
...but don't forget the performance of the shock deteriorates as do all diaphragm designed jobbies over time - so in theory rebuild that once every 6 mths and it should satisfy pretty well basically. But² (lol), one should still go quicker (or more consistently) again with more better-er shock, as is just the way with things 2-wheeled hey.
...as to the SD, well, it isn't the same as std. Ö quality, and like PGM said, it is all 'cause of Joe Public and the chances of things going awry if twisting on too much... too much steering damping can be bad basically... (as u know no doubt, but gotta say it still)

if anyone is curious how fast a stock as a rock ZX6 is, I managed a 1:05.2800 during the 4hr on it!
that's quite impressive for a stock bike with the wrong gearing and no changes to suspension.

should add that the bike also had a set of very well worn D211 GPA's on as well... so the rubber was a bit average!
AND.. on my all signing and dancing R6 fastest lap time was a 1.03.2
AND.. the 1.05.2 was on the 9th lap of ever sitting on that bike.
hmmm...
