Hey people, here is a letter I wrote about 6 months ago & planned on sending it to AMCN for the Access pages. I have'nt sent it cos I think it is a bit long & they like to keep em short & to the point. Maybe some of you could help me edit it or give me a few ideas. Or just tell me what you think? Would you support it?.............. OK here it is.
Imagine waking up on Sunday morning to the tune of 60 or so bikes warming up in the distance, crawling out of your tent & soaking up the view from Mt Panorama.
Many people remember it, but that's all it is.....a memory.
Put your hand up if you remember classic race meetings like the 4 Days of Bathurst, the Castrol 6 Hour & the Swann Insurance Series. Now keep em up if you would support a meeting that offered top shelf racing on one of the world's greatest road circuits.
I envisage production bikes (something like 600 Superstock) with race rubber, lapping Mt Panorama in an endurance race (think Castrol 6 Hour).. Now I understand Bathurst isn't a place to be taken lightly, it's a dangerous place & plenty of riders would cringe at the thought of racing there. You could say the same thing about the Isle Of Man & i've never heard of a shortage of riders willing to take on the challenging TT course. Riders know what they are dealing with & ride accordingly at about 80 to 90 %, because they may be brave but they are not stupid.
An endurance race would bring that number down even more I think, thrashing yourself & the bike is no way to ride if you want to finish the race let alone winning it. What a great advertisment it would be for the factories to win a true production class race. Inviting some of the boys who race the IOM would also give it an international flavour & world wide coverage.
As much as I would like to attend this imaginary race meeting, or even participate as a rider, I don't have the cash or marketing, promotional & oganazing skills to make it happen. However I would gladly volunteer my time & effort.
The Bikes Are Back meeting in 2000 was a great idea, unfortunately it was the same weekend as the WSBK's at the Island, damn shame.
I just know that when I was growing up the Easter weekend & the 6 hour were the stuff dreams were made of & now they are gone. Sure we have a top class domestic series, & the Oz GP & WSBK races are fantastic, but we have a piece of Aussie motorcycling history sound asleep up on that mountain & I think its about time we woke it up.
We know bike racing is dangerous. People may argue that today's bikes are to powerful for Bathurst, hence the 600 proddies idea as opposed to 1000's. Jeez I don't care if its 400's or the Suzuki Across Cup! I just want to head up the mountain with a heap of like minded bike nuts & enjoy the Easter weekend the way the bike gods intended us to. Bikes, beers, & telling lies around a campfire.
The tintops have their weekend in the sun every year , shouldn't we be able to have ours? Besides who couldn't do with a run up the Bells Line Of Road?
