This is my first track day with RATS, whats the go with garages?

Is there a sign up which one is for RATS, who should I look out for?

Thanks

Edit: Haha, I just read Jrads post, so its the last garage then?

The offical 'RATS' garage is as per above Mozz post..........we're normally there a little later and very little room in the RATs garage for our normal ACT group of 6-8 so we grab a garage to ourselves

Great to meet a few more Rats and see some of the others again.

Great day, ( despite a couple of nasty offs, that last one, wow the aftermath  ) kept dry all day, and everyone had fun..

a BIG THANX goes out to Tarrasque and Ibishu for a letting me take the 98 R1 out for a couple fo sessions : . First time riding with slicks, and damn those things stick, that bike handles and brakes so well too.
Took first session to just get to know bike ( never ridden it before) rear sets, pazzo's, Slicks and fear of dropping bike which isnt mine kept me slow, by end of second session I was getting comfortable, and then goes up the checkered flag :cursing: :lmao:
Thank you so much Tarra and Ibishu :ayyy:
Cant wait to get out there again, maybe on a familiar bike this time...like mine :)

Big Big Big Tanks to Tarrasque and Ibishu for pretty much changing my chain and sprockets!!! Thanks Guys!:notworthy:
Better acceleration and a little more confidence on T1 and T4/T5/T8 made me not only breaking the 2min barrier in 2 sec but beating Specs lap time by a few miliseconds :lmao::lmao: Sorry Specs... you still the fastest rider, I just have a faster lap time :lmao::lmao: (I know, I know... Can't say I had a great day but it was good to meet a few of the RATS.

A big thanks to Katoo, Tarrasque, Ibishu and whoever else helped me change my rear tyre. Now I know there are 2 wheel spacers to put back on. Luckily no damage done.

Did a PB of 1:52.5 in the one session I had a clean run at.

I don't know if anyone saw the last crash of the day or the aftermath of it but I stuck around and spoke to the guy about it, he said his swingarm broke as he was entering Turn 2. It wasn't an aftermath of the crash as everyone suspected but the cause of the crash. I won't be buying a Triumph anytime soon.

Tarrasque
31-08-2008, 10:01 AM
Oh what a day, changing chains and sprockets for Lucas, about 10 minutes too slow so he missed out on his first session. Having to also clutch start the R1, stupid cold mornings. Also helping Squash with his rear wheel as above. Helping some one else (forgot there name) with a puncher in the tyre. Giving brief advice to luci-lu with her battery issues. And lending Jonny the track bike at the end of the day.

Then in between all that doing some track time. Midday changing the rear wheel on the R1. What a huge difference that made, cutting 2 seconds off my time the first session out (Ibishu scrubbing it in for me), and constainly under 1:57.

Johnny
31-08-2008, 10:40 AM
Bigdog, starting to agree with you mate.

Squish (:lmao:),oops, Squash, I saw the aftermath of the Triumph when trailered in, I think the front wheel was allright:confused1:, rest was pretty much fucked, and seeing just part of the swingarm where it had snapped off from, wow, that mustve been an earlier fracture, cause no way it will just snap like that

Tarrasqu, Ibishu, the saints :lmao: well done guys and thanx again

I had a closer look at the bike too... broken swing arm, back wheel and a nasty chip on the frame! I'd say that one went to the bike's farm...
Also saw a crashed Desmo being put onto a trailer. Saddest thing but just a few scratches... Funny to think that'll probably cost him more to replace those fairings than to replace the street triple! :lmao::lmao:
Had fun in the day, first sessions were ok but then my poor condition started to show badly and my left leg just gave up on me...:storm:
Will be definitely spending some time at the gym before the next outing!

there were a whole bunch of desmos at the track yesterday. Was told that as part of Ducati's after sale service, they will pick the bike up from your house and bring it to the track for you and take it back after the track day. And they even provide their own suspension and parts service at the track day.

Now that takes the motorcycling addiction to a whole new level there.

My didn't need replacing, as long as you stay away from speed triple (not street triple, different bikes), you should be fine.

By the way, I've enjoyed my first outing in B2 after moving up from C. No more extremely slow people getting in the way. and the people are a lot more evenly matched. Even tough there are few very very fast bikes there, it's all good, I can see my skill level improving. My lap time went down by 5seconds to 2:06 and I'm looking forward to the next track day, hopefully it will go down by another 5 seconds.

Sat was a great day..........thanks to KAT00........!

set a 1:43.575 and lots more in 44-45s. A little disapointed not to knock a bit more time off but after some suspension tyre changes it was ok.

Loving RaceChrono so much!!!! The best part for me is my 1:42 on 19/7 showed me being slower in a few spots vs the 1:43 from 30/8 so I know if I performed the same I'd have been a bit quicker, maybe even into the 1:40s flat..............Next goal 1:39!!!!!!!

Ya hit the nail on the head mate.........I've used it for 3 track days now and it's simply brilliant for working out which sectors you're fastest in and trying to put the 1 lap together that has all the good bits from previous TDs.............even just picking up 1/10 of a Sec each lap will see around 1 second improvemnt for the full lap. Some of the laps that are like .60 - 1.2 seconds slower are all of about 5-10kms difference in certain parts...sometimes less.......

If anyone wants to get lap times, forget transponders, stop watches and asking yer mates to do it for you......LONG LIVE RACE CHRONO.........!! :mod_smilie_rockwoot

really...?! I was feeling pretty crappy that they're getting 1:35s from a stock 08 FireBarge with stockish rubber I'm running slicks on an Aussie Superbike (2006 model granted) and am only getting low 40s..........seems pretty bad to me...!!

In saying that, every time we improve the suspension settings it does it a little easier and I'm only NOW really REALLY starting to push the front hard....amazing how hard/deep you can go with slicks but yeh, again the AMCN Masterbike test showed quicker times with less rubber.........

I'm pretty certain, via RaceChrono, if I were able to hook up all the sectors I've been fastest in the time would be right on 1:40 so with a bit more time in seat and newer/better rubber (running dunnies atm....not a big fan) maybe another 1-2secs in it........

1:35s might be a bit of an ask but who else here is cutting into the 1:30s ? Does anyone else have RaceChrono data they want to share with similar lap times? I'd be interested to see where/by how much I'm losing.....

Cheers :ayyy:

what happened to you Captain, are you sick? first time I didn't see you in the track! :confused1:

BTW, talk to Nuff, hes the responsible for phones delivery in Optus...:cursing:
He's also the one behind server problems..:cursing: well if you have any problems just complain to him...:cursing:

Someone will get some butt kicking :argue: :cursing:

My influance on optus is close to 0. I look after some servers, but not mobile deliveries. I've waited 1 month to get my corporate one.

Sick as a dog mate, I've been in bed for a week straight. Of course I didn't know that I would be in advance, I just didn't sign up for this track day ... how much is too much?
My next one is the school at Wakefield next week, then the 11th of October at EC. Hopefully the new phone (& transmitter thingamagig) will be ready by then.

I'm no where near as fast as you, but I would love to see your lap times. I also agree about transponders, racechrono simply does it better. It can be bit hard to figure it out, since it doesn't have manual. But with lots of button pressing it is excellent software.

Here's a whole thread about them for you: http://nswroadandtrackbikes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4719&highlight=racechrono

If you are really keen you can get a bluetooth OBDII reader and get information about your throttle position, rpm and other things... otherwise the software is free.

as promised, 3 laps attached for viewing.....I'd be really keen to see others data..!!

They're .DAT Files (for use with things like DANAS etc).............2 laps are from 30/8 and the other is 19/7 - a 1:46, certainly not the best time however I did not have the laptiming going until 1pm so had already spent my best efforts however it's interesting to compare the different speeds etc........tell me what you all think or if I need to export them as .VBO/CSV etc.....

I've had a strict gym regime going so I'm stoked to see that usually by the end of the day I'm about 2-3 seconds slower - NOT ANYMORE!! Did my 2nd best laptime on 30/8 in the 2nd last session and I had been riding both Red and a few Green group sessions so did about 9-10 sessions all up.......it's all the motivation I need to do even more time at the gym! The biggest difference for me was the extra strength/stamina in my triceps and legs from braking so hard all the time....being only 60kgs and fairly slim means I'm not that strong but my weight also affects the bike less and power/weight ratio is much better :)

actually, I've had to add them as a Zip file as DAT files are an 'invalid' file type (most/all of the RaceChrono Exports will be invalid so zipping only way..)

And to make it worse, my last trackday on the R1 (wouldnt count this one, as it was on a borrowed bike, and only two sessions, doubt I broke the 2 min barrier ), I never even did that pb, but around the 1.56s :lmao:

Whats your plan Jrad, are you just going to go out there harder at each corner? Have you written down a summary of each corner at EC and what you think you could improve? Do you think you need more lean, more cornerspeed, earlier drive, later braking (earlier braking?) faster turn in? Whats your weakness that you're going to focus on?

j-rad
02-09-2008, 12:32 PM
My plans.........hmm....well.........suspension setup for one!

I have written a summary of what I'm doing at home and comparing to other EC Lap Guides around the place..... RaceChrono shows EXACTLY where and by how much I can improve...(as far as my own comparison laps go...which is why I'm keen to see GPS Data from someone else going that bit quicker)

More Lean....? Not for the most part...snapped my gear lever off at T2 last Sat (on after market higher rear sets!!) and am getting plenty of lean, no chicken strips on either front or rear tyres.......(my body position is not causing the decking out...)

One thing I need is earlier drive.....with 190BHP+ and a quick pull throttle it can be tricky dialling it in but I notice that the rear is now starting to slide on certain corners and I also need to pick my points a bit better as far as what I'm aiming for when going thru a cnr...ie: the billboard sign at T5 is where I'm aiming exiting T4 so a few more of these points that are outside the actual track itself as the speed is now getting to a point where if I use the some of trackside markers on certain corners at high speed it gets to fast to compute....I look up a bit for a sign or a pole or something and use that instead.......something one of the CSS guys mentioned to me at Philip Island last Dec and something I'm improving on each time....

But the biggest thing that is affecting my times – are down to suspension setup.

Basically the last 4/6 track days have been spent fighting a very tank slap happy bike. The settings were for a 95KG A grade rider and I'm 60kgs and no grade so you can imagine how stiff everything was tuned! We've now added more rear ride height (amongst other things periovusly like softer spring rates/valving) via the Ohlins shock and (temporarily) a Dunlop 195/65 I had to use up.

The turn in speed/change of direction is ALOT better since some recent changes....so basically every single time I've gone to EC I've had differnet settings, tyres, weather which has made it harder to be consistent and get the gains I'm after AND also know if it's me or the bike.........

My summary would be in order of importance:
1. Bike setup
2. Mid Corner speed
3. Earlier Drive
4. Don't give to much away to other RATs :) hehehehehehe

I believe, to some extent 2+3 will be helped by fixing 1. (well considering the slides I'm getting and the wear marks on both front and rear looks as though we could still improve suspension but then everytime you get a decent gain you really need to keep updating it??)

Any other suggestions? Did you look at the GPS data....any thoughtS?

I'm thinking with the new changes settling the bike down (and me finally having some confidence in the bike as up until now it's wanted to kill me with headshake) I'm hoping to cut into the 1:30s, how far into it no idea but they'll be high.

I’ve posted pics of T2 and also T9 (check the wear on the left side of that front on pic 'EC5'!!!)

cheers!

So, K5/6s are fun bikes to set up then J?!? :D

...as an aside (I'm good at all the meaningless and useless drivvle), when young Tommy first rode a litre this year - up from the 600 GSXR - it was on the K4 1000, and he immediately did some 39s followed by a 38.8 - all well and good maybe; but the times took a while on the K8 to get that low again - like 6 ride days or saink... Funnily enuff I am now dying to get that shock onto the K8 (with re-adjustment of course) for some testing..

...but here is the interesting part for me: one bike is using a completely different brand of shock to the other. Indeed, it smacks me in the face and says I need to not worry over the pressures put on me by the punters/consumers. What I mean is they seem to be "too often" trying to decide for me (well, them) what needs go onto their bikes (pfft!), or they just wanna copy XYZ Team Manager's choice, and apparently my opinings matter the least? Strangely familiar tune I'd say.... Anyways, I am working on a fix for a common problem at the moment with a majorly common shock (so dying to move into new shop for some P&Q R&D time) - but it is looking interesting from last night's "experiment-to-ride-home-on" shock I made up - we'll see... ;)

...anyways, soz about the :threadjacked:

ahhhh......BUT can this also be used with PCIII???? I've made some enquires but no one can tell me......

As long as PCIII is ODBII compliant it should work fine, it's a standard after all. If you have any issues with it, the racechrono developer is very approachable and very active at resolving issues and fixing bugs. Can't you hook it up directly to your bike's ODBII connector? I'm not quiet sure how PCIII works, so I'm guessing here.

I've a tuneboy for my 675 and in basic form it should read signal from any ODBII complient bike and display revs/throttle position. If you are interested I can hook it up to your PCIII and check how compliant it is.

:ayyy: just wanted to make sure theres a plan in place, not just a "I'm gunna go fasta" or something like that :D Great work JRad !

High Tension wire towers are great drive for points! Not only are they far away but in your line of sight (slowing things down) but they're forcing you to keep your chin up!

P.s. drive for the permanent port-a-loo coming up from 2 into 3, turn then drive to for the High Tension wire tower when driving out of T3, Same in reverse driving into T8, theres that same HT tower to drive toward (but its slightly right of line), again into T9, another HT tower in the background, once more going up the hill into T12 as theres a nicely lined up HT tower in the background.

Awesome piece of info there! Will definitely be paying attention to those things on the track. I struggle on some turns exactly for a lack of reference points.
The turn I struggle the most with for this same reason is T1 as I either run in too deep (then correct to avoid the stripples) or don't accelerate as soon as I could, losing time on the exit. I honestly don't know exactly where to clip the apex there...

jasonbw

I have the same problem in T1 Mr Ed, but theres two white lines across the track which can serve as a great reference point that I'll be trying next time out... using the towers is great once you pick the bike up for the drive, but a close - on the track surface - reference point is so important for points of timing, i.e. when you need to change either speed or direction.... i.e.2. braking markers/turn points, mid turn point are useful too for line consistency or in double apex turns like T2.

The last white line on the straight is too late - its where the track has already started turning, but the white line just before the pit exit cage is the turn point I'll try next time, about 1m in from the far outside (far right), turn on that line. Then adjust to suit.

I can dig up a picture if youd like?

EDIT: Just as an opinion, my Apex for T1 is about 5 ripple stripes from the end of the ripples (its red/white red/white) is where my knee is finally over the strip, then its over the grass for a moment till the Pit exit feeder. That gives me great drive to T2, and since its a fast section that is where time can easily be lost.

Thanks for sorting everything out for the day.:ayyy:

Had a great day, even though the battery completely gave up at the start of the 4th session. Must have been time for a compulsory time out. Need Thomas in top form and good shape for overnighter road trip this weekend, leaving work early heading for Oxley. Yeah! Thanks to Tarrasque , Ibishu :clap:for their mechanical help and technical advice, where would a fellow rat be without you,:clap:and everyone one else that helped out including Mick who managed to give me the number of at least 4 bike places none of which had a battery in stock :lmao::lmao: and the Ducati boys Warren & Stan for the multimeter.

Great to meet some other rats too, Dave, Johnny, Marcus.

I must say the Ducati team really make an impression and have excellent after sales customer service. There was even a Ducati family complete will all the wardrobe in midget kiddy sizes.

:lmao::lmao: for the record, just because I'm talking to one of several multiple Ducati owners, the owner of a Desmosidici and 749r, doesn't necessarily make him my boyfriend just because he's asian :lmao::lmao:

Had a look a the wrecked gixxer, not pretty, :crysmiley:the bike took the impact, not a panel unmarked, the guy says he the back slide and he lost it on T12, and can't remember what happened whether he high sided or low sided because next thing he knows he was on the ground. Luckily for him he can't remember, and is completely fine except he will be buffing for quite a while trying to get the scratches out. Witnesses say he hi sided.

Managed to make it back with battery for the last session, thanks Nelson. Need another TD I reckon, all the boys are leaving me and moving up to Yellow (B2) :lmao::lmao: Although I did hear it get a bit more agressive with the overtaking/undertaking the higher up you move. Not sure if I'm ready for that. Boys are so competitive.:dancesmiley:

I have used the white line reference lately and I have to say it helps a lot as an entry reference!! I'm braking much much later now and that's helped too. The problem I have is that sometimes I think I might not have breaked enough and lean a bit further causing me to run to deep... other times I think I breaked too much and accelerate earlier causing me to run wider than I'd like... I'm sure that most of it can be fixed if I find a good reference point on the track! I'll be trying the 5th ripple stripe thing (although my math is terrible at speed:lmao:) as it seems to be a good way to judge how far I've gone. I usually wait to the end of the ripple stripes before going back hard on the throttle but I ride a 600 and my speed through the turn is far from awesome... so I'm not recommending that to anyone!

I think for different ppl they will need to look for different markers or basically what makes them comfortable/confident as less experienced riders might start looking where they shouldn't and end up in the gravel but it's a 'baby step' thing and something that we take the approach with when teaching ppl to Stunt ride. No point in going all in first time as you won't live long and nor will the bike.....baby steps and small increments allow far more control/flexibilty and also teach you how to handle things when it goes wrong as you're only JUST going that bit faster (or higher wheelies) rather than the thing just flipping instantly (which I've seen many times LOL)..........

but we should all take note that looking further ahead at marking points outside the tarmac of the track is a good idea :ayyy: but I'm sure most of you already realise this!

Can't wait to see someone else's RaceChrono data....come on lads where is it!!??

ohhh yes, baby steps for sure... even drop down a group if need be... SO many times the very fast students at CSS say they're riding better after I ask them to slow down!! Yep, slow down to try new things. Pick the point that lets you get through the corner in one steering input and remember the sooner you can get back on the throttle (enough to have light acceleration) - the sooner the bike becomes stable - ideally right after you've finished steering when you're happy with the predicted line.

Hey J-Rad.... GOOD LUCK MATE!!! Hah hahahaha... maybe try www.formula-xtreme.com.au for that question :D :D :D :D

Here's the laptimes by j-rad, hopefully this upload works.

Rename the .zip to .rar and extract it using winrar. Let me know if it works.

nice mate, same as mine, works well!

Once you get it, go into race chrono setting and select the highest BAUD rate you can....these units default from factory at a 1Mhz setting > change it to the highest baud rate and you'll get 5Mhz or it refreshes to the satellites 5 time a second.
