Suzuki have been saying that they will give it all they got this year, its 25th ( I think ?) anniversary into the GP, for a couple years now.. SO good to see they come good.

But hell, Saying Rossi will again take the the season, going further into the record books, is like saying the saying the sky will be either blue or grey tomorrow. He's last two seasons signed with Yamaha, and has confirmed he will go do a full season in rally racing after it, so he will giving it all his got to make the records he sets, near untouchable, for along long time anyway.

Id love to see a video clip of that slide :ayyy:

Apparently Casey's wrist has been so sore (off season operation ) that he has only been able to manage 2-3 laps at a time, even so he has managed to set the fastest time so far!

Today is the final day of testing so hopefully he has another good day today!

I hope the Suzuki's early form hangs around for the rest of the season, it would be great to Loris and Vermeulen get some good results this year :ayyy:

After the second day of testing in hot and humid Sepang, here’s what the riders had to say:

Valentino Rossi: Position: 3rd Time: 2.01.626 Laps: 40

“Today we tested some new electronic solutions in order to allow me to open the throttle earlier and they were not bad at all, but we still need to work to improve it even more. This afternoon the stitches hurt me a bit, but my pace was still very good so I am happy. At the end of the day I had some fun with Loris Capirossi; we did a couple of laps together and I think that he enjoyed it a lot, because he beat me! I had fun, a lot of fun; it was like the good old times! Today I did not do the long run; I will do it tomorrow if my physical condition allows it. I may have to do it in two parts, so that it won’t put too much stress on my stitches. It will be interesting to do the long run with the new tyres, but I am not expecting it to be so much slower than last year.”

Jorge Lorenzo: Position: 10th Time: 2.03.056 Laps: 51

“Today was still quite difficult, although I am improving slowly. On this second day we have worked on our braking, because we have seen that Valentino is braking sooner than me and so I need to adapt. I need to use the hours we have and the available tyres in the best way possible, but that’s the same for everybody! My main problems at the moment are the braking and the corner speed. Right now I don’t feel at one with the bike and this means I don’t have the confidence to ride fast. I know I can be faster than this because my bike isn’t much different to Valentino’s and he is quicker than me. Of course he was using Bridgestones last year as well and I am new to them, but Colin is also fast so this shows how competitive the bike is. Today we didn’t find the solution, but we still have tomorrow lef t! The aim will be for me to try to adapt, and not to change too many things on the bike. If I can improve a bit, then maybe we will try a long run.”

Niccolò Canepa: Position: 14 Time: 2.04.021 Laps: 45

“In this second day of work things have gone a bit better for us. We have shortened the gears and we were able to result faster in top speed in the two final straights. We are still missing something and I hope that tomorrow we will find new solutions to be even faster. My feeing with the bike has also improved. Now, together with my track engineer, we are analyzing other riders’ data to understand where I still make some mistakes. At the end of the day I also managed to stay behind Loris Capirossi for a few laps and I noticed that in a couple turns I take a different line. Tomorrow I will try to change to see if it will help me to reduce a bit more my lap times.”

Mika Kallio: Position: 13 Time: 2.04.021 Laps: 55

“Today we have lost some time because we have meet the same problem encountered yesterday and this has in part limited our performances. We made it anyway to work on various technical aspects. Sincerely I expected more from today after the good start done yesterday. I hope the weather conditions will be the same also tomorrow so that we will be able to ride for as many laps as possible during the all day.”

Casey Stoner: Position: 1st Time: 2.01.483 Laps: 29 laps

“The wrist is giving me a lot of problems and I can’t manage more than two or three laps at a time, so it’s difficult to work on set-up because I’m having to break off too often. We’ve still managed to do some work on improving the feeling on the GP9, with some changes to the rear set-up that have improved the bike in the area we were suffering the most. Now it is much easier to ride. I still can’t ride how I want though and we really need to string a run of consistent laps together, although I know that if I can get a little closer to 100% fitness that problem will be resolved. Hopefully the wrist will feel a bit better tomorrow so that I can try and do a longer run and confirm the positive feedback we’ve had from the bike today.”

Nicky Hayden: Position: 9th Time: 2′03.034 Laps: 58 laps

“We made a big improvement immediately this morning on used tyres and I was able knock a second off my best time from yesterday. We struggled a bit in the afternoon, though, and didn’t manage to improve any further. I can’t push it on the harder compound tyre because it makes the rear move around so much more and the bike becomes unstable. At the end of the session we made a little change that improved the situation and I was able to get back onto my better lap times. The Bridgestones are really consistent and that makes our job a lot easier. Today I did 35 laps on the same front tyre without any problems! We know and I know that there is a lot of work to be done. Everything is still very new to me – the engine characteristics, the chassis and the tyres, as well as the way the team works together. Obviously it’s not easy to put all that together straight away. We’re working hard though and the improvements will come.”

Sete Gibernau: Position: 11th Time: 2.03.308 Laps: 34

“We’ve done a great job today. We tried to work on both the chassis and the electronics because they are both very important areas with this bike. The programme was pretty clear although on a couple of occasions we lost our way a little – especially with the electronics. Now it’s a case of sitting down and working out why that happened, where we went wrong, and this is the ideal time for that kind of thing. I feel good - it was a positive day’s work because we’ve been able to try a few things for the first time. Like everybody we’re trying to work out how to get as much life as we can out of the tyres but like I said the most important thing today was figuring out the electronics.”

Randy DePuniet: Position: 17th Time: 2.04.507 Laps: 48

“It’s very difficult for me to ride in these conditions. We tried many things to adjust the setting but I still struggle on corner entries. I cannot take on corners as I normally do. If I push a bit more I could easily crash and this is very frustrating.”
“Meanwhile the engine performance is getting better and this makes me more confident for the future. I know that my team is working hard to find a solution. The season is very long and this is just the first test.”

Dani Pedrosa: Position: 4th Time: 2.01.860 Laps: 51

“I’m satisfied of the work done today, we focused on chassis and suspension and also worked with tyres in order to find the best compromise with our machine. Today I was much more comfortable on the bike, I could be faster from the first laps and we could work on the bike testing all the items we had to test for this test session. In fact I know this bike, which is an evolution of last year bike, and this gives me an advantage compared to last year, when the bike was completely new for me. We have pointed out the aspects we want to improve for Qatar. Tomorrow a race simulation was scheduled but at the end we decided to end the test session because today I could only do 5,6 laps in a row and tomorrow I won’t be able to cover the race distance. Last December, in fact, I underwent an intervention to the left knee for the consequences suffered when I slid off in Phillip Island during the last race in October. I only need some rest”.

Andrea Dovizioso: Position: 8th Time: 2.02.434 Laps: 44

“Today we focused on bike set up and we continued evaluating the chassis. We found some very good points and some aspects that need to be improved. My lap times have improved today even if we haven’t found the best compromise at the moment, this is a good feeling because I could be fast today also without the best configuration. Tomorrrow we will continue testing and I’d like to define with the team the direction to follow for next test session scheduled at the beginning of March in Qatar”.

Toni Elias: Position: 6th Time: 2.02.232 Laps: 51

“I am satisfied with this second day. I still have to learn the bike but in general I am happy with the package that we have at our disposal. We have continued to work on bike set-up and on tyres in order to find the best compromise with the bike.”

Alex DeAngelis: Position: 12th Time: 2.03.518 Laps: 41

“At the end of the day, the feelings have been decidedly positive. After having worked with the team and having tried various solutions it seems that we have taken the right road. Sure there is much more work to do but the my pace has improved.
“I am still finding it hard to ride as I would like and this has slowed my lap time. On the long straights of this circuit the bike is very fast, while we miss a bit of power at low revs.”

I read somewhere that the europian riders prefer to keep there front and rear wheels inline. Where as the Ausies don't mind the rear sliding around (which make sence of the great photo of Casey)

Following that logic though, Hayden from a dirt track background should be a shoe-in for the Duc.. I guess we'll see.

To be fair though, he's not had too much time on a bike that by all reports (never having tested it myself!) is pretty ferocious. I'm optimistic about his signing to Ducati though, he was spectacular on the RC211V when that was sliding around the place and the Desmo should compliment that style I should think.

Damn it they should start racing now! I can't wait until Qatar in March!

yeah but everyone else is right there, and some surprises there at that. It is only a test, but when you take out the tyre scenario of the past, this looks a bit more of a guage on how things may go, with any luck.

Heres a quote from crashnet

Toseland: The biggest accident of my career
James Toseland may have avoided broken bones during a huge 200km/h highside - the biggest accident of his career - on Thursday at Sepang, but a hard bang on the head and heavy bruising meant the Briton could accomplish little during the following two days.

The Tech 3 Yamaha rider was making his debut on the 2009 YZR-M1 at the Malaysian test, but went 'too fast too soon' during his first ever run on the hardest compound Bridgestone tyre - with painful consequences.

“It's just my head,” a sick looking Toseland told Crash.net before leaving Sepang on Saturday evening. “I landed on my head and concentration has been an issue ever since. I'm banged up, but I was so lucky not to come away with a broken bone.

“It happened when I went out on the harder compound tyre for the first time - last time at Jerez [in November] Bridgestone had brought the soft and medium compounds - and it was just my inexperience. I didn't get the left hand side of the tyre up to temperature so when I got to the first left hander, on my first flying lap, it just chucked me off.

“It was 200km/h. I was just lucky not to be more badly hurt, but I think it knocked me out as I can't remember the ambulance ride back to the pits. I can't remember a lot of what happened to be honest, which is a bit strange. I'll go home and get checked out because I just couldn't focus after that.”

Toseland's hopes of a fast lap time were eliminated by the accident, but that didn't stop the determined Briton getting back on track before the day had finished.

“I got back out for the last 45 minutes on the same day, because with a big crash like that it's important just to get back out there and get riding again,” he explained. “It was the biggest crash I've ever had

Birdman45
08-02-2009, 11:06 AM
see that's fukt, he has trouble concentrating but they let him back out? Someone should have their arse kicked for that shit, if he'd have died there'd be hell to pay.

and who said TC stopped hi-sides? LOL

Stu23
08-02-2009, 11:13 AM
Yup

Was thinking the same......should not have gone back out at all, could have been a danger to himself and others around him....I like the guy....got balls of steel, he really does, its just that I think guys klike that need saving from themselves. Takes a hell of a manager to do that !

If you read the article, he was banged up , arm and leg sore as hell, could not remember things...this is BAD.......
In the UK not so long ago, I know a guy who hi sided onto his head, he felt sick and a bit off......later on in the afternoon, he goes out for his race, he didnt complete a lap, they think he died on his bike ( brain bleed ) . Allways think its the guys with balls who need the help the most ! They do not know when to quit... Was a sad day

Casey Stoner (Ducati Marlboro Team), fastest time 2'01.043 (38 laps)

"Today wasn't bad! The more I ride the GP9 the more we understand how to improve the set-up of the new chassis and today we made a big step forward with improving grip and feel with the new bike. Considering that I have recently had an operation and my wrist has still not full recovered, to be the fastest rider here is a dream to be honest. Now I have to work hard on improving my physical condition and recovering the level of movement I need to ride the bike properly without pain. Now I know that I can step up training on my arm and hopefully the situation will have improved for the Qatar test. The GP9 is a good bike and in every test we've done with it we've come out on top. That doesn't mean to say that we can afford to relax, though, and we'll keep our heads down and keep working. I set pretty much the same lap time on both tyre compounds and I actually prefer the harder one. The fact we've gone to a single tyre rule doesn't seem to have an adverse effect on the performance of the Bridgestones - they're doing a great job, as usual."

Nicky Hayden (Ducati Marlboro Team), fastest lap 2'02.496 (62 laps)

"We started out on the right foot again today and I managed to knock six tenths of a second off my best lap from yesterday. Then in the early part of the afternoon I had a little crash in turn two, where to be honest they've done a bad job of resurfacing the track and it has caught a few riders out this week. Luckily I wasn't hurt. Obviously I'm not happy with my lap times, I was expecting more from myself, but I have to stay positive. I've improved my lap times every day and we have gathered a lot of data to work from in the next test. The fact Casey is already so fast means that the bike has the potential - it can only be a good thing that he is going so quick. The team is working hard and they are just as determined as I am to get the results, so that's a good thing. I wasn't too bad in the first two sectors but I was losing too much in T3 and T4, where the problem I'm having with the bike being unstable and unpredictable on the exit was the worst. The Bridgestones are really consistent and I was able to do my first long run on the Ducati without any tyre life problems
ROSSI
Position: 2nd Time: 2'01.137 Laps: 43

I am leaving this place feeling happy, because we've made a good start. Everything went well: my pain is less, the bike is good and I am feeling better and better. We finished everything we wanted to do on the bike and the setting and the rhythm is quite good. The lap time is fast so we have made a good start. We didn't do the long run, but actually we didn't need to. Without my injury maybe it would have been possible, but in this situation we decided to leave it. My injuries are getting better each day because they're only cuts and they're healing fast. I don't think that they made much difference to my speed here and by the Qatar test I will be back in perfect shape. I did the fastest lap today with the hard Bridgestone tyre, so it means that the bike is good. For sure we need to improve some more but since this year we have less testing, this performance has been very important. The first test of the year is always difficult, even if you trained a lot in the winter, so I am happy! Qatar will be interesting, because last year we weren't strong there, but then last year the bike was not yet ready when we went to the first race in Doha. I am really looking forward to the next text there."

I like this for CEII:

"More productively for the team, however, Edwards was in fine fettle on the other side of the pit-box, getting through his scheduled workout well ahead of time, enjoying a solid race simulation on the second day and finishing fourth fastest on the final day – just 0.37s off pace-setter Casey Stoner’s best time."

Colin Edwards claims he hardly needed to touch the 'awesome' new Yamaha YZR-M1 on his way to fourth position at the Sepang test - during his debut on a bike that feels like a 990 - and has cracked the 'secret' of using Bridgestone tyres.

The Tech 3 star was seventh fastest out of the 19 riders during the first two days in Malaysia, when he lowered his best lap from 2min 3.254sec to 2min 2.241sec, then jumped forward to fourth on the final day with a 2min 1.413secs.

That placed the Texan just 0.370sec behind Ducati's Casey Stoner and only 0.276sec from the lead Yamaha of Valentino Rossi.

?Yamaha knew how to make the bike better, especially with the Bridgestones - because of Valentino using them last year - and that was the key thing,? explained Edwards, during an exclusive interview with Crash.net. ?The bike is a little bit different from what I ended on last year but it's working awesome.

?We just showed up here, and sh*t, the first day we never even touched it; not a click, not a spring! Then on day two we tinkered around a little, but even after three days we're still more or less on the same setting. Just fine tuning - and it's working.?

Edwards believes that reigning six time MotoGP world champion Rossi deserves the credit for such an instantly effective machine.

?I think Valentino had, and has had, full lead development with this bike and whatever he asks for from Yamaha, he gets,? said the #5. ?The most important thing for me is that, what he asked for is what I would have asked for.?

The double World Superbike champion then revealed that the biggest progress has been in terms of power delivery, with Yamaha 'plugging the holes' in the 800cc M1s powerband so that it now acts more like a 990. ?We needed some more grunt off the corners,? stated Colin. ?We were pretty much at the limit as far as trying to carry maximum amount of corner speed to keep the RPMs where you want it, so you could have some power exiting the corner.

?It was really hard to dice with somebody last year because if they screwed your line up you dropped out of the powerband. So Yamaha have really worked a lot on that - bottom and mid-range - and now you can almost make a little mistake, square it off and you have power.?

Like the 990s were?

?That's exactly what I'm talking about,? he replied. ?It's like instead of worrying so much about top speed, top speed, top speed - now we have the top speed - so they've worked on filling in some of the holes [in the powerband].?

Success in MotoGP 2009 will be dependent on extracting the maximum performance from the new limited range of Bridgestone rubber, available to all under the new single tyre rule.

Tech 3 was the only two-rider team still using Michelin tyres by the end of 2008 and, having missed the Valencia post race test, Edwards and Toseland arrived at Sepang with less Bridgestone experience than even the three class rookies - having only two days at Jerez in late November under their belts.

Edwards had left Jerez eighth fastest, 1.2sec from the top, and knew that the 'Michelin style' had to go. After some careful analysis and a little experimentation at Sepang, the 34-year-old says he was able to identify the 'secret' Bridgestone technique.

?Hell I'd been on Michelin for ten or eleven years, so when I went to Jerez I was still riding it like I was on Michelins, and it didn't work,? confirmed Colin. ?There's a definite trick, a little secret, to riding the Bridgestones, to pull all the potential out of them. There's a technique to doing it - and I want to keep that to myself!?

So how did you find it?

?I found it on my own,? he replied. ?Basically from watching the Bridgestones on track; I know what they can get away with and what they can do. Then, having found out at Jerez that the Michelin technique wouldn't work, I started putting all the information together and experimenting a little. ?Once you get it, you get it. You're done,? he revealed. ?But I'd still say there is another 3-4% I can pull out of the Bridgestones, but finding the trick was the main thing.?

Then one last hint: ?I'm a front end guy. I've always been a front end guy and the front plays an important role with the Bridgestones. You really need to figure it out.?

Edwards also agreed that the Bridgestone front is very good ?which is playing into my hands, absolutely, I'm liking that!?

Edwards certainly seemed to find something at Sepang, where he finished the test as the fastest of the new Bridgestone riders. Fiat Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo was the next best ex-Michelin rider, half a second slower than Edwards on the same machine, while Toseland's test was effectively written off after a huge opening day fall.

A former Aprilia, Honda Gresini and factory Yamaha rider, Edwards will be starting his seventh MotoGP season in 2009.

Since joining the premier-class Edwards has taken ten podiums finishes - two of them with Tech 3 last season - but, in contrast to his 31 WSBK victories, is still searching for a debut win.

Having made way for Lorenzo at the factory team, 2008 began strongly for Edwards, with both podiums and five front row starts from the first ten rounds. Those results put Edwards fifth in the championship, but the remaining eight races were far harsher and Colin slipped to seventh by the end of the year.

?We got lost a little bit on our settings during the second half of last year. We were trying different things to... well... make the tyres better,? he explained. ?If the tyres had been great we probably never would have touched the thing, but we knew we were f***** so we thought we'd at least try and make it work somehow.

?So we got a little lost, but this year we won't,? he insisted. ?We'll stay the course; stay with the baseline and just tinker. That's all we should need to do.?

Edwards revels in testing superiority over Toseland

Friday, 13 February 2009
‘Texas Tornado’ reveals Sepang delight in Indianapolis event blog.

“It’s so funny how we don’t talk anymore”

Not a reference to a late 1970’s break-up song, but an admission from Tech 3 Yamaha’s Colin Edwards that relations have somewhat soured between himself and teammate James Toseland. The statement was made in the Texan’s new ‘Tornado Warning’ blog on the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix website. A switch of Crew Chiefs has driven a wedge between the two riders but, as in the song, Edwards isn’t losing any sleep over the matter.

“He’s not on the Christmas card list whatsoever. It's funny. We don't talk anymore after this little incident,” revealed Edwards on the rift between himself and his Yamaha satellite colleague. Both riders’ opinions on the changes in the garage have been well documented, but the recent Sepang test has left Edwards even more outspoken and with more than a touch of schadenfreude.

“We looked good in front of him, (Toseland) being 2 ½ seconds off the pace. That was good times. You should hear some of the comments being made. He got the Crew Chief he wanted. That was going to make all the difference in the world, and we just sit and laugh. We have a good time,” writes the 34 year-old, who was altogether more positive about his partnership with new Crew Chief Guy Coulon.

“He's got so much experience. I think he's been doing it since early 70s. I'm really happy. I don't have to stroke ego like I did last year. Everybody's just so relaxed, just happy to be riding motorcycles.”

Edwards has always been a strong tester, and the American is excited about the package used thus far in preseason. Having admitted to losing his way with excessive tinkering in 2008, ‘back to basics’ will be the key philosophy for the veteran this year.

“We changed a couple of things (at Sepang), but you could jump back on the first bike I started with, and you could hardly be able to tell the difference. 2002, my last year in World Superbike, we had a bike like this. We pulled it out, and we went through a whole bunch of stuff the first test. But then we pretty much kept it the whole year. I don't think we really changed much. A click here, a click there… and I won the title.”
