I have an avatar i would like to use.
it is a gif file that runs for a few seconds, but when i choose it for this site it comes out as a still.
how do i move the file so it is a moving one.

How have you uploaded it? There are two options, I imagine it would work best if you were to host it elsewhere and use the first option (URL).

Either way, I'll be so happy to not see your existing one any more.

You will need a photobucket account of sorts upload the gif to there, then copy and paste the URL from e.g photobucket (the host) and past in URL section of the avatar upload.

What he said.
Did you find the gif on a website somewhere? If so, you might be able to right-click on it, and find out its' 'properties' (web address). You might be able to copy and paste without having to host the gif anywhere else.
